To keep an old WhatsApp backup useful, preserve the complete source and record which account and period it covers. Save readable exports of important conversations so you can revisit them without performing a phone restore.
What you need
- Existing backups or a phone still holding the history.
- Free Memora Keep on Windows or macOS for supported sources you want to read.
- Any required passwords and space for separate dated copies.
Record the source details
For each backup, note the account, device, creation date, method and location. Record the earliest and latest messages you actually checked rather than inferring coverage from the backup date.

The export date tells you when a file was produced. It is not the date of every message inside it.
Keep the complete source
Retain the entire iPhone backup directory. For Android, preserve the files collected by the supported backup workflow, including associated media.
A crypt database is encrypted. It may contain valuable message data, but is not independently readable as text, and it does not include all separate attachments. Keep the required credentials securely.
Do not rearrange files inside a source backup merely to make its folders look tidier.
Check an old backup
Import a supported source into Memora Keep and check the account, an older exchange and a media file. If the source cannot be opened, record the error and investigate its format, completeness or password.
Do not assume cloud services offer every historical backup version. Check WhatsApp’s current Google account backup guidance rather than relying on an older date being recoverable.
Save dated reading copies
Export important chats as PDF or HTML + Media. Use separate folders such as 2024-05-family-trip and record both the source date and export date.

Keep each package intact, retain another copy on separate storage if needed, and periodically reopen a sample. Memora Keep’s archive does not replace a user-managed history of source backups and exports.
