WhatsApp Backup vs Export Chat - What Each One Is For

A WhatsApp backup supports a particular restore process. A chat export gives you a reading copy to open, print or share. If you need both phone recovery and convenient access to old conversations, keep both kinds of copy.

Choose between restoring and reading

For restoring to a phone, follow a supported backup or transfer process for your source and destination devices.

For reading outside WhatsApp, save text, PDF, HTML or CSV files. WhatsApp’s official restore process does not re-import these reading exports.

Understand the backup route

WhatsApp offers platform-specific backup and recovery methods, including Google account backups on Android and WhatsApp’s iCloud chat backup on iPhone. Account, phone-number and device requirements matter.

An iPhone device backup and WhatsApp’s own iCloud chat backup are separate sources with different restore procedures. Check WhatsApp’s backup and restore guidance for your situation.

Understand the reading formats

WhatsApp’s built-in Export Chat saves text with optional attachments. Packaging and available sharing options depend on the device.
