How to read WhatsApp chats on your computer

Open backed-up WhatsApp conversations in Memora Keep — bubble view, in-chat search, media preview and account merging — with the phone unplugged.

Prerequisites

  • WhatsApp data already in the archive, from an iPhone backup or an Android WhatsApp backup
  • Memora Keep installed on a Windows PC or Mac
  1. 1

Get the WhatsApp data into the archive first

Reading happens against the local archive, so the chats have to be imported before they can be read. On an iPhone, WhatsApp is included in the full device backup. On Android, it is backed up separately through WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business.

  2. 2

    Open the WhatsApp category

The Archives view has a WhatsApp category, and the WhatsApp page lists the accounts that have been imported, so you can tell one account from another when several are present.

  3. 3

    Pick a conversation

Choose the contact or group you want to read. Messages are rendered as conversation bubbles, so direction and sender stay readable instead of collapsing into a wall of text.

  4. 4

    Scroll back through history

Scroll up to load earlier messages and down to load newer ones. The app loads more of the conversation as you scroll.

  5. 5

    Search inside the conversation

Use the search in the open chat to find matching text and jump to a message. Search currently covers that conversation only.

  6. 6

    Preview the media in place

Images and video can be previewed and played without leaving the conversation, so you can confirm which photo someone sent without exporting anything first.

  7. 7

    Review or merge archived accounts

Use the account list to review imported accounts. If you want to combine their stored histories, review the merge settings and run the merge. Merging removes duplicate messages; it does not combine live phone numbers.

Notes

The point of reading chats on a computer is that you stop being limited by a phone screen. Long threads, old photos and attachments that are awkward to find on a handset are much easier to work through on a desktop.

What stays the same as the phone

Direction, sender and timestamps are preserved, because the archive is built from the real message data rather than from a summary. Attachments are the originals that were in the backup.

What is different

Use the larger screen to review long conversations, search within a chat and select messages for export. You can also preview photos and videos alongside the messages they came with.

Frequently asked questions

Does the phone need to stay connected?

No. Once the chats are in the archive you can unplug the phone — reading goes to the local archive, not to the device.

Can I search across all my conversations at once?

Not yet. Search currently works inside the conversation you have open. Cross-archive search is not implemented.

Why do I see the same chat twice?

Check which archived account each copy belongs to. If their histories overlap, review the account merge option to combine stored data and remove duplicate messages.

What can I delete from the archive?

Yes. WhatsApp accounts can be deleted from the account list, and individual items can be removed from a timeline detail view. Deleting from the archive does not touch the original backup folder.
